Friday Night Bible Study, FBCK

Analysis and Discussion:  Matthew 4:1 & 2      August 22, 2014
This will be discussed on Aug 27th too

Thoughts for your consideration:

Verse 1 & 2

Place:  Tradition tells us this event occurred near.  Why the desert? – It is empty of distractions!

One thing is clear about Jesus from this verse and this event as found in the Bible.  Jesus felt, Jesus believed, and Jesus Knew He was one with God- The Son of God, God’s Son in human form.

This event of Jesus in the desert had to be told to the disciples by Jesus, otherwise we would not know about it.  Since He discussed this, it was clearly an important event.

This is the third time, the Spirit is reported in Jesus’ life. His conception- Matt 1:18, His baptism-Matt 3:16, and here.  For the Jews, the Holy Spirit upon a man was part of their history.  In the Old Testament (OT) the Spirit, God’s Spirit came to men from time to time.  With Jesus, this was to be permanent and in His Resurrection, His disciples permanently receive the Holy Spirit;  so to God’s Spirit is with us in our acceptance of Jesus as Savior (

Acts 2:38 NKJV).

.

This event shows Jesus’ devotion and obedience to God.  As with us, this event shows Satan’s, the evil of this world, desire to break Jesus’ bond with God.

“Tempted” in the Greek is ‘peirazo’ meaning to test in a good or bad sense, but usually used in a bad sense.  In the bad sense, it means to provoke to be sinful.  Jesus clearly passes the three ‘tests’.
What is the purpose of any ‘testing’?

‘Satan’, What is the meaning?  It, he is sometimes called the devil.  In the OT, the word began with the meaning of adversary in very wide terms, and was an agent of God for testing not evil.  The other words, devil, Greek for ‘diablo’ means ‘slanderer’.  In Persian thought, ‘adversary’ is against God.  It is perhaps during the Jews captivity in Babylon which became dominated by Persian Kings in the late 500s BCE that the thought about Satan begin to change to and become synonymous, the same as, with the word ‘devil’.

Regardless of the motivation, Jesus’ time in the desert was a time of final consideration of the force, example, and tone of His ministry to the people He had come to serve.  The decision was would He do His ministry God’s way or the way the Jews were seeking in their messiah.  The answer came from where Jesus would be obedient, to God and His word or self centered desires.

Does testing mean you are always tempted?

Verse 2

“fasted forty days and forty nights…” – this in Biblical literature means more that it was a long time, not necessarily and specifically 40 days and night.  The Jews understood this as this number is used often in the OT. Genesis 7:4,12; Numbers 14:33, 32:13; Deut 9:25,25:3; Psalms 95:10; Jonah 3:4.  In the OT, fasting was always associated with a spiritual experience, sin, and/or testing

Jesus would have eaten very little if anything during the 40 days, but would have required water.
The Jews would have connected this desert event to their heroes of the OT, Moses and Elijah (Exodus 34:28; Deut 9:9; 1 Kings 19:8)..

For the writer of Matthew, likely the apostle Matthew of Jesus, connecting Jesus to the Old Testament is a common theme of this book.

What happens to our mind when our body becomes weak?
Do we become easier to be moved to do things we should not do?

The essence of this event is that Jesus had to firmly decide how to do His ministry.  He prayed, thought, fasted- cleansing his body of any toxins, prayed, and held firm to what He knew He had to do.  Clearly, He was tested, if any real temptation came to Him, His first thought in His lack of hesitation of defending Himself was Scripture.

Jesus knew the Torah, the first five books of His and our Bible, He knew the writings of the OT, in this, Jesus sets the example of a great Leader; likewise, we should study and know scripture for our lives, our inner battles, and our daily, worldly testing.

What are the three temptations of the Devil about?
We shall see:  one is about Jesus’ immediate needs (food); one is about doing miracles for the people; and one is about political power.

How this applies to us:
In our daily lives we are faced with many opportunities, some people call them problems.  They give us chances to rise as much as a chance to fall, fail, and live fruitless lives.

Just as Jesus did, we too should pray about events in our lives, seek guidance in the scriptures, and seek to feel the Holy Spirit in our lives to guide us in all of our decisions.

This is the Will of God for our lives.  In future lessons we will see Jesus doing this and living in God’s will, even into His death.

What do you think was Jesus’ last temptation?

Thanks be to God.

Scriptures to consider for your life and future Bible Study discussions.

Ephesians 2:8 NIVNew International Version
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

Jesus  said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done."

Things to Consider

1. Who is, What is, Where is Satan also known as the devil?

2. What is the Holy Spirit? In verse one referred to as just ‘Spirit’.

3. Why did Jesus fast, that is seek to survive on minimum water and food?

4. What is the pattern of the statements (temptations?) to Jesus?

5. What is the pattern of the answers of Jesus?

6. Why did Jesus even spend that long time (40 days/nights) in the desert?

7. How many times did it take questioning Jesus before Satan gave up on Him?

8. From Jesus’ answers, what can we say about Jesus’ focus and main concern while being in the desert?

9. Is there a difference between being tested and being tempted?

10. Why is this event important to us? The recording of this event in the Gospels, as all that is written has to be important or it would not have been written and passed on and on and on.

11. Do you think Jesus was truly tempted?

Scripture:

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry.

Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."

But He answered and said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.' "

Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple,

and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you,' and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash

your foot against a stone.' "7Jesus said to him, "It is written again, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.' "

Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

And he said to Him, "All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me."

10
Then Jesus said to him, "Away with you, Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.' "

11
Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.

12  Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee.

13  And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali,

14  that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

15  "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles:

16  The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death Light has dawned."

17  From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

Thanks be to God.

Seven Elements of Jewish History

  1. Jewish history began with a man named Abram, later renamed to Abraham about 2100 years before Christ.  He and his family lived in the Southern part of present day Iraq south of present day Bagdad.  In a period of time that most of the world's peoples believed in many gods, it came to Abram's heart and Abram began to and come to believe in one God, and worshiped only what he considered the one true God.  For this, God spoke to Abram.
    ...
  2. Abram, a man of wealth, felt a call from God to move his family, home, live stock, servants, and all else he had to a place he would be shown in the west what we now know as Palestine, called Cannan at the time.  This was a considerable move of great faith on the Abram's part and from this the nation of the Hebrews was born in Cannan.  This Hebrew nation eventually became the nation of the Jews with a promise of God that Palestine would be the land of the Jews, forever and would be a great nation of nations.  Upon Abram's arrival in Cannan, God changed Abram's name to Abraham.
    ...
  3. Good times, Bad Times, Return to God, Hebrews in Egypt 400 Years
From the Christian Old Testament Bible we learn of the 1100 years of Abranam , the promises of God to make from him a great nation and his children who are the foundation of and the development of the Hebrew nation.  In that 1100 years, for about 400 years the Hebrews were captive and in slavery under the dynstaes of Egypt.  From that slavaery a leader of the Hebrews named Moses arose.  Under the leadership of Moses and through God's Grace, over one million of the Hebrews escaped Egypt about 1350 BCE +- 100 years.
    ...
  4. Moses and the Hebrews Return to Cannan
To prepare the Hebrews to become the great nation of Israel, God required the Hebrews to be in the desert of the Egyptian Saini for forty years.  During this time the Hebrews rebelled and then returned to the worship of God.  Depending on various methods of dating, the Hebrews who began to call themselves Israelites were allowed back into the land of Cannan/Palestine sometime between 1450 and 1250 BCE.  It is only about the time of their reentry into Palestine after 40 years in the desert that archeological evidence of the nation of Israel can be found.  This is aside from some inconclusive evidence of Hebrews in Egypt during the 400 years mentioned.

    ...
  5. Saul, King David, Israel becomes a Mighty Nation, King David, Decline
Moses dies before the Hebrews, now called Israelites, return to Cannan.  The return was most eventful and those events are the earliest archelogiacl evidence of Israel people find in Israel today.  For perhaps several hundred years the Israelits begin a process of growing into a large nation sometimes worshiping God, sometimes not.  After a period of time disconnected Israelite tribes (12 of them),  form a nation under a King named Saul.  This is not according to God's plan, but it what the people wanted and God allowed it to happen.  Saul is a decent king in the beginning, but in the end, he is killed in war and King David is annointed King.   Israel grows and flourished under King David, a God loving King, and generally life is good.  Upon King David's death, two of his sons take over and the Kingdom is split, and the "mighty" nation, in turning from God's desires, declines breaking up into the Northern Kingdom called Israel and the Southern Kingdom called Judah.
    ...
  6. Sorry Kings, Rise of the Prophets,
With the breakup into two nations, the once thriving nations turning from God begins a decline into selfishness, sorry kings, ethically poor 'religious' leaders and crude sinfulness. Approximately 740 BCE to 721 BCE the Assyrian nation over-ran the Northern Kingdom Israel destroying much of the nation, and over a period of time transferred the Jews of Israel to various parts of the world.  This is commonly kown as the 'lost 10-tribes' of Israel.
Judah was under seige for a period of time by Assyria but survived for over 130 years until they too fell to the Babylonians in 587/586 BCE.  The leaders of Judah including the religious, political, tradesmen, etc, and people of wealth were exiled to Babylon along with their writings, tools, and some wealth.  In Babylon some were enslaved but a community of Jews arose and basically thrived.  It 539 BCE, the Persians conquered Babylon and allowed the Jews who wanted to, to return to Judah with their wealth and added to it .  The Persian King even paid for rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem.  Generally, during the exile, the priests of the Jews collected and redacted the scrolls of the Temple, and put together much of the material of the Old Testament as we know it.
    ...
  7. The promise of a Savior, The Last Prophet, John the Baptist
       To be completed

more to come

A great book about Jesus, His time, events around His life is "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel.  As an atheist, he started writing and investigating for this book to show his wife that Jesus was a fake, but before he finished the book, Mr. Strobel became not just a believer, but a truly ardent, active believer.

Lee Strobel has also written "The Case for a Creator" and "The Case for Faith".

Thanks be to God.

A Short But an Important Often Used Word

A Short But an Important Often Used Word

There is a word,
a short word so often used.

It begins most questions.

It often is the response to answers.

This word drives us to learn new information.

This word can cause us great pain,
but it also leads us to great accomplishments.

This word causes us to loose sleep,
but, it also comes to mind as we wake up.

This word is a great motivator,
but also, causes us great worry.

This word begins the questioning of our existence,
but, leads us to the answer.

The word is:  Why

Why do we desire love?

Why do we exist?

Why do we want and desire to live
in the many Trials and Testing of our daily lives?

Why do we sometimes want more
but often settle and are very happy with less?

Why do we desire relationships?

Why do we seek something beyond our existence?

Why do forgive and seek forgiveness?

Is the Self Will to Live and Survive part of our DNA?
If so, why is it there?
If that Will to Live is not in our DNA,
Then why do we feel it so strongly?

In our desire to live
Why does a person choose to die to save someone else,
even when it is a stranger.

What is stronger-   The Will to live or Love?

John 3:16 NRS
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but
    may have eternal life."
Read John 3 NRS  |  Read John 3:16 NRS in parallel

In seeking the Kingdom of God,
in searching for the answers to
Why we are on this rock called Earth,
                God will reveal the answers.
We just need to keep
asking and seeking His answer to all our "Why?"s.

We are not here just to survive, God made us to thrive.

In reading the Bible, often we do not understand what we read due to insufficient knowledge.  We just have to keep reading, take in what we understand, re-read, and re-read, pray for understanding, and read again.

Because something is hard to understand, that is no reason to give up.  I read and read scripture, newness and greater understanding of Scripture often comes but, so very often understanding comes when I least expect it.

Be patient, believe and trust, and
     understanding will come.

Why do we desire to love?
Seek Jesus, Accept Jesus, understanding will come.

Thanks be to God.
