Just Some Facts
- Jesus was born a Jew in a little town called Bethlehem in an area called Judea in a country called Palestine. Jesus lived most of His life in Galilee, another section of Palestine. Palestine was an area, a country, of the world dominated by outsiders for most of history. It was a crossroads for countries wanting to trade with other countries. Who ever controlled Palestine collected fees (money) from countries who wanted to trade with other
countries. At the time of Jesus, the Romans controlled Palestine with a firm and determined army. Because it was a conquered nation for the 700 years before Christ, the people (the Jews) were very poor. Note- to see an interactive map of Palestine, click the word 'Palestine' in bright blue in this paragraph.
... - With the Roman occupation, not only did the Romans control the crossroads of the world, they collected taxes, harsh taxes from the people of Palestine. Needless to say, the Roman leaders were not liked by the Jews and the people of Palestine. Because of this, the Jews were looking for a leader among themselves, a savior, promised by God of the Old Testament. The Jews wanted this leader to purge the Romans from Palestine. The one positive of the the Roman occupation of Palestine was safe roads and villages. Robbers, thieves, etc were often dealt with trial and execution, very often crucifixion.
... - Jerusalem was the center of the spiritual life for the Jews. It was established by King David, a Jew, about 1000 years before Christ. David's successors built a temple in Jerusalem at which major spiritual events were held. These events were celebrated only in Jerusalem. The Jews had meeting places for preaching and teaching in towns throughout Palestine and in other places in the world. But the Big Events were only held in Jerusalem. Jesus attended these events during his lifetime. The Romans learned to leave the Jews and their religion to the religious leaders and in return the religious leaders (the Sadducees, Pharisees, scribes, and teachers) kept a tight control on the Jews. Any protest or disruption of the peace was not allowed. In the last of His life, Jesus became a disruption that had to be controlled by the religious leaders of the Jews.
... - After age two, and a return from Egypt, Jesus, Mary His Mother, and Joseph the husband of Mary lived in Nazareth of Galilee. Jesus was raised to be a Carpenter like Joseph. However, Jesus was trained in the Jewish ways of loving God and knowledge of their 'Bible' called the Torah, our first five books of our Old Testament. He knew His Torah well leaning how to read Hebrew and be a Master teacher, memorizing much of the Torah. It is just what great teachers did in Jesus' time, memorize scripture.
... - Another language that Jesus could speak was the Greek. About three hundred years before Jesus, Alexander the Great conquered much of the world and made Greek a required language to be spoken by all peoples in his conquered world. Our New Testament was mostly written in Greek. The Gospel of Matthew was possibly written in Aramaic or Hebrew, but mostly appeared in Greek. Nearly all of the ancient copies of what we call the New Testament (some 4,000+ manuscripts or pieces of manuscripts) are in Greek.
... - The Gospel of Matthew was written approximately 20 to 30 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus. It was written primarily to convert Jews to become Christians.
... - Christianity is the only faith in the world that believes in a Leader, Jesus, who was killed, buried, but resurrected by God three days later.

A great book about Jesus, His time, events around His life is "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. As an atheist, he started writing and investigating for this book to show his wife that Jesus was a fake, but before he finished the book, Mr. Strobel became not just a believer, but a truly ardent, active believer.
Lee Strobel has also written "The Case for a Creator" and "The Case for Faith".

Scriptures to consider for your life and future Bible Study discussions.
Ephesians 2:8 NIVNew International Version
Ephesians 2:8 NIVNew International Version
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--
Jesus said to them, "Because of your little faith. For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, "Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
41 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."
42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done."
